Tarangire is the park that safari veterans love and first-timers overlook. Ancient baobab trees, some over a thousand years old, stand like sentinels across a landscape where elephant herds of 300 or more walk in single file to the Tarangire River. In the dry season, this river is the only water source for miles - and every animal in the ecosystem comes to drink.

Tarangire National Park

Elephant Kingdom

Tarangire holds the largest elephant population of any park in northern Tanzania. In the dry season (June-October), herds of 200-300 elephants gather along the Tarangire River. Watching a family group cross the river at sunset, baby elephants splashing between their mothers' legs, is unforgettable.

Baobab Landscape

The park's iconic baobab trees give Tarangire a landscape unlike any other in East Africa. These ancient trees - some over 1,000 years old - create a dramatic backdrop for wildlife photography. Lions and leopards are regularly spotted resting in their branches.

Fewer Crowds

Tarangire receives a fraction of the visitors that the Serengeti and Ngorongoro do, yet the wildlife density rivals both - especially in the dry season. You can spend an entire afternoon at a waterhole watching elephants, giraffes, and zebras arrive without another vehicle in sight.

Trip Designer

Brighton has spent the last decade building safaris across the East African circuit, from the Serengeti's migration corridors to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. He started out guiding walking safaris in Tarangire, then moved into gorilla and chimp trekking after years escorting researchers through the Albertine Rift. His itineraries turn on the small details most operators skip: the right camp on the right night of the migration, a permit window that lines up with the gorilla family closest to your lodge, a quiet bush airstrip that saves a full day on transfer.

Testimonials

I've been to the Serengeti three times. Tarangire was better.

We almost skipped Tarangire to add another day in the Serengeti. Our guide convinced us to go. On our first drive, we sat at the river and watched over 100 elephants come to drink. No other vehicles. No noise. Just elephants and baobabs and the sound of water. It was the highlight of our entire trip.

Good to know

Best Season

Tarangire is a dry-season park. June to October is prime time - animals concentrate around the river and wildlife density is extraordinary. In the wet season (November-May), many animals disperse across the wider ecosystem and the park is quieter.

Walking Safaris

Tarangire is one of the few northern Tanzania parks where walking safaris are permitted. Walking among the giant baobabs with an armed ranger is a completely different experience from a vehicle - you hear, smell, and feel the bush.

Location

Tarangire is only 2 hours from Arusha, making it the easiest park to reach in the northern circuit. It combines perfectly with Lake Manyara (1 hour), Ngorongoro (3 hours), and the Serengeti (5-6 hours).
