Nyerere National Park - formerly the Selous Game Reserve - is five times the size of the Serengeti and receives a hundredth of the visitors. This is wild, raw, untouched Africa. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River. Walking safaris through miombo woodland. Wild dogs hunting in packs. If the northern circuit is the blockbuster, Nyerere is the director's cut.

Boat Safaris
The Rufiji River is Nyerere's lifeline, and a boat safari here is unlike anything in northern Tanzania. Hippos surface metres from the boat. Crocodiles line the sandbanks. Elephants wade across the shallows. Fish eagles call from the riverine forest. This is safari from the water.
Walking Safaris
Nyerere is one of Tanzania's best parks for walking safaris. With an armed ranger and your guide, you track animals on foot through the bush - reading spoor, identifying bird calls, and experiencing the African wilderness at ground level.
Africa's Wild Dogs
Nyerere holds one of the largest remaining populations of African wild dogs - one of the continent's most endangered predators. Watching a pack hunt cooperatively, communicating with high-pitched calls, is one of the rarest and most thrilling sights in the safari world.

Trip Designer
Brighton has spent the last decade building safaris across the East African circuit, from the Serengeti's migration corridors to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. He started out guiding walking safaris in Tarangire, then moved into gorilla and chimp trekking after years escorting researchers through the Albertine Rift. His itineraries turn on the small details most operators skip: the right camp on the right night of the migration, a permit window that lines up with the gorilla family closest to your lodge, a quiet bush airstrip that saves a full day on transfer.
Trip Inspiration

Snapshot of a Day
The boat drifts silently downstream. A bull elephant stands chest-deep in the Rufiji, trunk raised, spraying water over his back. A crocodile slides off the bank ahead. Your guide cuts the engine. The only sound is birdsong.

Testimonials
“We saw wild dogs hunt. I cried. My husband cried. The guide cried.”
On our second morning, our guide spotted fresh wild dog tracks. We followed them for 45 minutes before finding the pack - 14 dogs resting in the shade. Then they stood up and started hunting. The coordination was extraordinary. We watched the entire chase. There was not another vehicle within 50 kilometres.

Getting There
Nyerere is best accessed by bush flight from Dar es Salaam (45 minutes) or Zanzibar (75 minutes). Road access is possible but takes 6-8 hours from Dar. Flying in is part of the experience - the aerial view of the Rufiji River delta is stunning.
Wet vs Dry
The dry season (June-October) concentrates wildlife around water sources and makes game viewing exceptional. The wet season (November-May) brings lush green landscapes and migratory birds, but some camps close and roads become impassable.
Combine with Zanzibar
Nyerere is the closest major park to Zanzibar - a 75-minute flight connects bush safari to beach. A classic combination is 4 days Nyerere + 3 days Zanzibar - wilderness and ocean in one trip.

Bush flights from Dar es Salaam (45 minutes) or Zanzibar (75 minutes) are the best option. Road access takes 6-8 hours from Dar. Flying is strongly recommended.
Yes. A 75-minute flight connects the two. A classic combination is 4 days Nyerere + 3 days Zanzibar for wilderness and beach in one trip.
Nyerere offers boat safaris and walking safaris that the Serengeti does not. It receives far fewer visitors, giving a more exclusive, remote-Africa feel. Wild dog sightings are more reliable here.
