Africa's best-kept secret. A park that rivals the Serengeti - and you will have it to yourself.
Area
1,442 km² of semi-arid savannah and mountain landscape
Unique Species
Cheetah, striped hyena, aardwolf, ostrich, kudu - found nowhere else in Uganda
Remoteness
Uganda's least-visited park - often no other vehicles on the game drives
Landscape
Semi-arid savannah framed by the Morungole, Napore, and Lotuke mountain ranges
Access
2-hour charter flight from Entebbe to Apoka airstrip
Kidepo Valley is the park the guides whisper about. In Uganda's far northeast, pressed against the Sudan and Kenya borders, a vast semi-arid wilderness holds wildlife found nowhere else in the country - cheetah, striped hyena, ostrich, and kudu - in a landscape so empty and beautiful it recalibrates your sense of what Africa can be.

Wildlife Found Nowhere Else
Cheetah, striped hyena, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, greater kudu, lesser kudu, and ostrich. Kidepo's semi-arid habitat supports species absent from every other Ugandan park.
Frontier Remoteness
This is Uganda's least-visited national park. Game drives without another vehicle. Sundowners without another soul. A wilderness experience that feels like the Africa of a century ago.
Karamojong Culture
The semi-nomadic Karamojong people have lived in this landscape for centuries. Their elaborate beadwork, cattle-centric culture, and warm hospitality add a profound human dimension to the safari.

Trip Designer
Brighton has spent the last decade building safaris across the East African circuit, from the Serengeti's migration corridors to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. He started out guiding walking safaris in Tarangire, then moved into gorilla and chimp trekking after years escorting researchers through the Albertine Rift. His itineraries turn on the small details most operators skip: the right camp on the right night of the migration, a permit window that lines up with the gorilla family closest to your lodge, a quiet bush airstrip that saves a full day on transfer.
Trip Inspiration

Snapshot of a Day
Your vehicle is the only one on the plain. A cheetah sits upright on a termite mound, scanning the grassland with laser focus. Two hundred metres away, a herd of Uganda kob grazes, unaware. The tension is electric. Behind the cheetah, the Morungole Mountains catch the afternoon light. You could be in the Serengeti. You could be on the moon. You are in Kidepo, and you are alone.

Snapshot of a Day
You are on foot, following an armed ranger through waist-high golden grass. He stops, raises binoculars. Two hundred metres ahead, a herd of greater kudu - spiral-horned, elegant, alert - picks through the riverine bush. You crouch and watch. The wind carries dust and the faint smell of sage. No engine noise. No other humans. Just the grassland and the animals and the silence.

Testimonials
“We spent four days in Kidepo and did not see a single other tourist vehicle. Not one. The lions looked at us like we were the first humans they'd seen in weeks.”
Our guide Samuel had grown up Karamojong before training as a ranger. He read the bush like a language - "that dust cloud is buffalo, maybe eighty, moving to the river." He was right. He showed us cheetah, striped hyena tracks, a leopard on a kopje, and more elephants than I've seen anywhere outside Amboseli. But what stays with me is the silence. Standing on the lodge terrace at night, no artificial light for 100 kilometres, the Milky Way so bright it casts shadows. This is the Africa most people dream about and never find.

Good to know
Fly In, Don't Drive
The road from Kampala is 10-12 hours on rough terrain. A 2-hour charter flight from Entebbe makes Kidepo accessible and comfortable. Most itineraries use fly-in/fly-out logistics.
Pack for Heat and Cold
Daytime temperatures reach 35°C on the valley floor, but nights can drop below 15°C at higher elevations. Pack layers and sun protection.
Best Paired With
Kidepo combines well with Bwindi (gorillas) or Murchison Falls for a diverse Uganda itinerary. Most 10-14 day Uganda safaris include Kidepo as the remote highlight.
Kidepo-valley safaris
Kidepo Valley Fly-In Safari - 4 Days
Fly into Uganda's most remote and spectacular park for four days of frontier safari. This is the Uganda safari that the guides keep for themselves.
Kidepo Valley Ultimate Safari - 5 Days
Five days in Uganda's most spectacular wilderness. Extended game drives across both the Narus and Kidepo valleys, night drives for nocturnal predators, a walking safari with armed rangers, Karamojong cultural immersion, and the silence of a landscape so vast and empty it recalibrates your sense of scale.
