Trip Designer

Brighton has spent the last decade building safaris across the East African circuit, from the Serengeti's migration corridors to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. He started out guiding walking safaris in Tarangire, then moved into gorilla and chimp trekking after years escorting researchers through the Albertine Rift. His itineraries turn on the small details most operators skip: the right camp on the right night of the migration, a permit window that lines up with the gorilla family closest to your lodge, a quiet bush airstrip that saves a full day on transfer.

Trip Inspiration

2-Day Chimp Trek

Snapshot of a Day

The tracker stops and points. Thirty metres up, a dark shape swings between branches with the casual confidence of a gymnast. Then the pant-hoot starts - a single voice, answered by another, then five more, building to a crescendo that shakes leaves from the canopy. You feel it in your chest before your ears process it.

3-Day Primate Experience

Snapshot of a Day

It is 7am and you have been in the forest for an hour. A mother chimp sits on a branch, her infant clinging to her belly, and methodically inserts a stripped twig into a termite mound. She withdraws it, covered in termites, and eats them with evident satisfaction. The infant watches. Tries. Fails. Tries again. You are watching culture being transmitted.

Testimonials

Six hours with the chimps during the habituation experience. I watched a juvenile learn to use a stick for termites. I cried on the walk out.

Our guide Ronald had been working with chimps for 14 years. He knew every individual by name and personality. He pointed out the alpha male - "that's Roscoe, watch how the others move when he passes" - and sure enough, the group parted like a crowd making way for royalty. But the moment that undid me was watching a mother patiently demonstrate termite fishing to her infant, over and over. The patience. The teaching. It was so human it hurt.
