Trip Designer

Brighton has spent the last decade building safaris across the East African circuit, from the Serengeti's migration corridors to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. He started out guiding walking safaris in Tarangire, then moved into gorilla and chimp trekking after years escorting researchers through the Albertine Rift. His itineraries turn on the small details most operators skip: the right camp on the right night of the migration, a permit window that lines up with the gorilla family closest to your lodge, a quiet bush airstrip that saves a full day on transfer.

3-Day Gorilla Trek

Snapshot of a Day

The tracker raises his hand. Through a gap in the undergrowth, you see a silverback's broad back, silver saddle gleaming with rain. He turns, meets your eyes, and returns to stripping bamboo. Your heart is hammering. His is not.

Testimonials

The silverback sat three metres away, stripping bamboo with hands that could crush a coconut, and looked at me with an expression I can only describe as patient curiosity.

Our guide Emmanuel had been tracking gorillas for 18 years. He read the forest like a book - a bent branch here, fresh dung there - and we found the Nkuringo family within two hours. When the silverback stood to his full height, I understood the word "impenetrable" differently. It's not the forest that's impenetrable. It's the emotion.

Good to know

Book Permits Early

Gorilla permits sell out 3-6 months in advance during peak season (Jun-Sep). We secure permits as part of your booking, but early planning is essential.

Fitness Matters

Treks can last 2-8 hours through steep, muddy terrain at altitude. You don't need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness makes the experience far more enjoyable. Porters are available for $15-20.

What to Wear

Long trousers, long sleeves (protection from stinging nettles), waterproof boots with ankle support, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, and a rain jacket. The forest is wet regardless of season.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $700 per person, which is half the price of Rwanda's $1,500 permit. The permit allows one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Book well in advance as permits sell out months ahead, especially for the June-September peak season.

Gorilla trekking ranges from moderate to strenuous depending on where the gorillas are that day. Treks can last 2-8 hours through dense, steep forest at altitudes of 1,160-2,607m. Reasonable fitness is required, but porters are available to assist. The terrain is muddy and slippery - sturdy waterproof boots and gardening gloves for gripping vegetation are essential.

The dry seasons of June-September and December-February offer the best trekking conditions with drier trails and clearer skies. However, gorilla trekking operates year-round. The wet seasons (March-May, October-November) are quieter with easier permit availability and lush, dramatic forest conditions.

Both offer extraordinary gorilla encounters. Bwindi's advantages are the lower permit cost ($700 vs $1,500), more habituated gorilla families (over 20), and a wilder, more immersive forest setting. Rwanda's Volcanoes offers easier access from Kigali and generally shorter treks. The gorilla experience itself is equally profound in both.
