Book Permits Early
Gorilla permits sell out 3-6 months in advance during peak season (Jun-Sep). We secure permits as part of your booking, but early planning is essential.
Fitness Matters
Treks can last 2-8 hours through steep, muddy terrain at altitude. You don't need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness makes the experience far more enjoyable. Porters are available for $15-20.
What to Wear
Long trousers, long sleeves (protection from stinging nettles), waterproof boots with ankle support, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, and a rain jacket. The forest is wet regardless of season.

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $700 per person, which is half the price of Rwanda's $1,500 permit. The permit allows one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Book well in advance as permits sell out months ahead, especially for the June-September peak season.
Gorilla trekking ranges from moderate to strenuous depending on where the gorillas are that day. Treks can last 2-8 hours through dense, steep forest at altitudes of 1,160-2,607m. Reasonable fitness is required, but porters are available to assist. The terrain is muddy and slippery - sturdy waterproof boots and gardening gloves for gripping vegetation are essential.
The dry seasons of June-September and December-February offer the best trekking conditions with drier trails and clearer skies. However, gorilla trekking operates year-round. The wet seasons (March-May, October-November) are quieter with easier permit availability and lush, dramatic forest conditions.
Both offer extraordinary gorilla encounters. Bwindi's advantages are the lower permit cost ($700 vs $1,500), more habituated gorilla families (over 20), and a wilder, more immersive forest setting. Rwanda's Volcanoes offers easier access from Kigali and generally shorter treks. The gorilla experience itself is equally profound in both.
