Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest park, where the entire Nile River explodes through a 7-metre gap in the rock. Big game safaris, Nile boat cruises, and the thundering falls.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest protected area at 3,893 square kilometres, sprawling across the northwestern corner of the country where the Victoria Nile carves its way toward Lake Albert. The park is named for its centrepiece - the point where the entire Nile River, swollen with the waters of Lake Victoria, is compressed through a rock cleft just seven metres wide before detonating 43 metres into the thundering cauldron below.

The falls are nature in its most violent, beautiful form. Standing at the top, you feel the earth vibrate. A permanent rainbow hangs in the mist. The roar drowns conversation. But Murchison Falls is far more than its waterfall. The park offers the best savannah game viewing in Uganda, with large populations of elephant, Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard, buffalo, and hartebeest roaming open grasslands that recall the great East African savannahs.

The Nile Boat Cruise

The upstream boat cruise from Paraa ferry crossing to the base of the falls is one of East Africa's great wildlife experiences. For three hours you cruise along the Nile as it narrows, the banks closing in and the wildlife intensifying. Hippo pods lounge in every bay. Nile crocodiles - some exceeding five metres - bask on sandbanks. Elephants emerge from the woodland to drink. Pied kingfishers hover and dive. Goliath herons stalk the shallows with prehistoric patience.

As you approach the falls, the sound builds from a distant rumble to an overwhelming roar. The boat anchors at a safe distance, and you witness the full fury of the Nile's compression - millions of litres per second thundering through a gap you could almost jump across.

Northern Bank Game Drives

The park's northern bank is Uganda's premier savannah game-viewing area. The landscape is classic African savannah - open grassland punctuated by borassus palms, woodland patches, and the meandering Nile. Game drives here regularly produce elephant herds, Rothschild's giraffe, lion prides, leopard, Jackson's hartebeest, oribi, and enormous herds of Uganda kob. The northern bank is the only place in Uganda where you can reliably see Rothschild's giraffe in the wild.
