Kilimanjaro Weather and Climate
Understanding the weather on Mount Kilimanjaro is critical to a successful climb. The mountain creates its own microclimate, and conditions change dramatically as you ascend through five ecological zones. A climber starting at the gate in a t-shirt and shorts will be battling sub-zero wind chill on summit night just days later. This guide provides the detailed climate data you need to prepare properly.
How Kilimanjaro's Climate Works
Kilimanjaro sits just 330 kilometres south of the equator, yet its summit is permanently below freezing. This apparent contradiction is explained by the lapse rate - the principle that air temperature drops approximately 6.5°C for every 1,000 metres of elevation gain. With nearly 4,100 metres of vertical ascent from gate to summit, you travel through temperature differences equivalent to moving from the tropics to Antarctica.
The mountain also intercepts moisture-laden air masses moving inland from the Indian Ocean. As these air masses are forced upward by the mountain's bulk, they cool and release their moisture as rain (at lower elevations) or snow (above approximately 4,500 metres). This orographic effect means the southern and eastern slopes receive significantly more rainfall than the northern side.
Temperature by Altitude Zone
Cultivation Zone and Gate Areas (800m - 1,800m)
The starting points for most Kilimanjaro treks sit at around 1,800 metres in a warm, humid environment.

Heath and Moorland Zone (2,800m - 4,000m)
Above the treeline, you lose the forest's protection and become exposed to wind and direct sun.

- Humidity: Extremely low (under 20%)
- Oxygen: Roughly 50% of sea-level concentration
- What it feels like: Arctic. The combination of extreme cold, high wind, thin air, and physical exhaustion makes summit night one of the most challenging experiences most climbers will ever face. Every piece of warm clothing you have brought gets worn.
Rainfall Patterns
Kilimanjaro's rainfall follows two distinct patterns driven by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ):
Long Rains: April to May
The heaviest rainfall occurs from early April through late May. Precipitation is heaviest in the forest zone (50-200mm per month) and decreases with altitude. The upper mountain receives snowfall during this period. Trails become waterlogged and some routes become genuinely dangerous.
Short Rains: November to Early December
A secondary wet season brings lighter but still significant rainfall. Conditions are generally better than April-May, but unpredictable. Some years the short rains are minimal; other years they are persistent.
Dry Seasons
January-March and June-October are the dry seasons. Rainfall drops dramatically above the forest zone, and the upper mountain is typically clear. However, brief afternoon showers can occur in the forest at any time of year, and snow flurries are possible at the summit even during dry months.

Wind Conditions

Lower Zones (Below 3,500m)
Winds are generally light and sheltered by terrain and vegetation. The forest provides almost complete wind protection.
Moorland and Alpine Desert (3,500m - 5,000m)
Winds become more significant above the treeline. Afternoon winds of 20-40 km/h are common, particularly on exposed ridges like the Shira Plateau. Wind direction is predominantly from the southeast during the dry season.
Summit Zone (Above 5,000m)
Summit night winds can be fierce. Sustained winds of 30-50 km/h are common, with gusts occasionally exceeding 70 km/h. The combination of strong wind and extreme cold creates dangerous wind-chill conditions. The Machame and Lemosho routes approach the summit via Barafu Camp, which is notoriously exposed to wind.

Practical Weather Advice for Climbers
Layer aggressively

Protect against sun and cold simultaneously
At high altitude, you can get sunburned and frostbitten at the same time. Apply SPF50 sunscreen even on cloudy days, and ensure all skin is covered with warm layers during summit night.
Hydrate constantly
The dry air above 3,500 metres accelerates moisture loss through breathing. You lose water far faster than you realise. Drink 3-4 litres per day and consider electrolyte supplements.
Be prepared for rain in the forest
Even during the dry season, the rainforest zone can produce showers. Carry a waterproof jacket accessible in your daypack at all times during the first day.
Expect the summit to be harder than you imagine
