Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park occupies 1,442 square kilometres of rugged semi-arid landscape in Uganda's far northeastern corner, pressed against the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. It is the most remote park in the country, and therein lies its magic. Where other Ugandan parks have lodges on every ridge and minibuses on every track, Kidepo has silence. Vast, panoramic, humbling silence broken only by wind through dry grass, a lilac-breasted roller's call, or the distant rumble of an elephant herd crossing the Narus Valley.

The landscape is unlike anywhere else in Uganda. Kidepo is semi-arid savannah framed by rugged mountains - the Morungole range to the south, the Napore range to the west, the Lotuke mountains to the east. The broad Narus and Kidepo valleys floor the park with golden grass that ripples in the wind like an inland sea. Flat-topped acacia trees punctuate the plain. It looks, in places, like Kenya's Laikipia or northern Tanzania's Maasai Steppe - wild, open, and achingly beautiful.

Unique Wildlife

Kidepo's remoteness and semi-arid habitat support species found nowhere else in Uganda. Cheetah, striped hyena, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, caracal, greater kudu, lesser kudu, and ostrich are all present here and absent from every other Ugandan park. The park's lion population is healthy and visible, with prides often seen on the open plains. Leopard sightings are regular, particularly around the rocky kopjes. Elephants move through in herds of 50 or more during the dry season when water sources concentrate.

The Karamojong

The Karamojong people have lived in this region for centuries, and their pastoral culture adds a powerful human dimension to a Kidepo safari. Semi-nomadic cattle herders, the Karamojong maintain traditions - elaborate beadwork, scarification, cattle-blood-and-milk drinks - that have changed little over generations. A visit to a manyatta (homestead) is a fascinating cultural encounter that provides context for the landscape you're driving through.
