Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge sits on the forested slopes of Mount Meru, about 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha town. Built in 1905 as a colonial farmhouse and once the estate of the Von Trapp family, it has been run by the same family since 1974 and remains one of the oldest privately owned lodges in East Africa.
The lodge offers 10 garden rooms, 2 main house suites, a Kilimanjaro Summit Suite and a 3 bedroom pool cottage, each furnished with antiques, four poster beds and private verandahs looking over the gardens and lakes. Guests can walk the grounds spotting colobus monkeys, giraffe and abundant birdlife, ride horses through the surrounding countryside, or take a dugout canoe out onto the spring fed crater lake that borders the property.
A year round outdoor pool, spa treatments, a games room and a restaurant serving meals on the veranda or by candlelight round out the lodge experience. Its location makes it an easy first or last night stop for a northern Tanzania safari circuit, close to Arusha National Park and within reach of Kilimanjaro views on clear days.
