Hilala Camp

Hilala Camp opened in November 2025 as the second camp in the Nyumbani Collection, and it was built for the part of Tarangire most visitors never reach. The camp stands on the eastern edge of the Gursi Swamp in the south of the national park, about 40 minutes by road from Kuro Airstrip and roughly two hours from the main gate, so the vehicle traffic that clusters along the Tarangire River in the north is simply not here. The swamp holds water all year, which keeps elephant, lion and a very long bird list within reach of camp through the dry months. There are only seven suites, six standard and one family suite formed from two interconnecting units, each about 40 square metres under canvas with a 12 square metre verandah facing the bush, a private en suite bathroom, an in room safe, wardrobe and bathrobes. Guest life happens in one open sided mess area: a lounge of deep sofas, a bar and a dining tent, with furniture and canvas designed by local artisans in Arusha and an outdoor fire for after dark. Being in Tarangire rather than the Serengeti also opens up activities the Serengeti rules do not permit, notably night game drives once the Gursi Swamp comes alive and guided walking safaris with an experienced ranger, alongside day drives, bush breakfasts, Maasai spear throwing and hot air balloon flights on request.
