Chumbe Island Coral Park

On a tiny coral island barely visible from Zanzibar’s west coast, Chumbe Island Coral Park has spent three decades proving that a handful of thoughtfully built bungalows can fund the protection of an entire ecosystem. The island’s reef sanctuary shelters roughly 90 percent of East Africa’s hard coral species and hundreds of reef fish, all within easy snorkeling distance of the shore, while its forest reserve is one of the last patches of pristine coastal thicket in the region, home to giant coconut crabs, rare Ader’s duikers, and nesting seabirds. Accommodation is limited to seven bungalows across three categories: two spacious Seafront Bungalows on the beach’s edge, two Seaview Bungalows a few steps from the water, and a single storey Garden Bungalow set in the greenery, each with a king size bed on an open sleeping platform, a hammock strung lounge area furnished with African textiles and handmade pieces, and a self contained bathroom with a composting toilet. There is no electricity grid, no piped water, and no plastic on Chumbe. Everything guests use is solar powered, rain harvested, or composted, and that ethos extends to the kitchen, where the team cooks with sustainably sourced local fish and produce and shares its recipes in a published cookbook. Because Chumbe operates as a not for profit, every guest night helps fund a ranger team, a marine research program, and a free environmental education center that has hosted tens of thousands of Zanzibari schoolchildren over the years, making a stay here feel less like a holiday and more like a quiet contribution to one of Tanzania’s genuine conservation success stories.
